What I’ve Learned Since The Outcast’s Release + Double Audiobook Giveaway!
I once heard that launching a novel does not change your life, but it has. Almost one year ago—July 1, 2013—my debut, The Outcast, was born, and in many ways I feel like I was reborn right along with it.
Honestly, I did not enjoy that launch season very much. The same as with the birth of my firstborn daughter, I pushed myself too hard and my expectations were too high.
I expected my daughter to sleep through the night by twelve weeks old, and I expected The Outcast to be on the NYT bestseller list by twelve weeks old.
Let me tell you, neither happened.
I spent energy I didn’t have to spare, trying to wrench open doors that were not willing to budge.
I bemoaned trivial details and didn’t celebrate the small victories.
I set the joy of writing aside to pursue marketing when—carefully modulated—I could’ve done both.
The Outcast has no doubt been successful, but I believe that most of this success could’ve happened with me just sitting on my front porch, enjoying the journey rather than pushing on doors.
So, guess what? The Midwife, my sophomore novel, is twenty-nine days old, and I’m sitting on the front porch, enjoying the journey.
My husband commented this week that this launch season has been so calm. He almost seemed afraid to admit this—as if to jinx everything and stir up a publicity-crazed tempest of a wife—but I just smiled and nodded, breathing a sigh of relief that he was right.
Part of this is because I’m thirty weeks pregnant with our second little girl, so there’s only so much waddling around and wrenching of doors I can do to make things physically happen.
Another part is because the past year has built my trust in my publisher, and I know they are working at wrenching open doors that I don’t have the power to open on my own.
Another reason is because—though I never want to become apathetic about promoting my work—I believe that the art of writing must always come first.
I am not a publicist or a social media guru. I enjoy these aspects of my career and know they are important.
But they are not as important as the words and the worlds that they create.
One of the people I most respect in my publishing house asked me last summer how my debut author experience was going. I admitted I was having trouble juggling it all, so she told me to simply stop. To say no. To instead focus on the stories because she would rather have my stories than my efforts to promote them.
I am a slow learner, so it’s taken an entire year for her words to sink in.
And yet, now I’m heeding them.
I am doing all of the publicity work I love: connecting with readers through book signings and social media, doing radio and newspaper interviews, and writing guest posts, but I am also working on a story and therefore I am doing what I know I was made to do—typing away on the front porch as hummingbirds zip around my head and the crows squabble over the rain-watered garden.
This is art; this is beauty. This is the process that should always come first.
Writers, did it also take you a while to realize that writing must come before publicity? How do you juggle both?
In honor of the end of audiobook month, Oasis Audio is generously offering a double-pack giveaway of both The Midwife and The Outcast. Just share what you’re reading right now to enter!
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.

Julia Munroe Martin
“This is art; this is beauty. This is the process that should always come first.” I love this message, Jolina. And I’m so glad you’re sitting on the porch enjoying the journey (and writing more stories!). As for juggling marketing–although it’s not exactly the same for me since I’m self published–I still focus on the writing and try not to think or worry about the book already out there. It works almost all the time because (like you) I’m doing what I know I was made to do! Great post!
jolina
So glad I’ve had support like dear friends like you, Julia, while I figured this writing business out. 🙂 It’s so much better to share the journey with friends. Here’s to front porch writing this summer! Hugs!

Oh, yes! We’re always learning in this life–aren’t we, Sharon? I am definitely an audiobook fan as well–even more so now that I’m a mama without as much reading time on my hands. Thank you for stopping by and visiting!
Carissa Wix
Currently I’m reading every pregnancy/parenting book or journal I can get my hands on. I’m 25 weeks along with our first child. I know someday I’ll laugh at myself for focusing so much on what the experts think because mommy intuition will kick in and take over, but for now I feel like I must study up on techniques and philosophies for raising baby W “right”. I also aspire to have baby W sleeping through the night at 12 weeks…I’ll let you know how the journey goes! LOL. I’d imagine I’ll did myself where you did.
jolina
You’re so cute, Carissa! 🙂 Congrats, Mama! It might work out better for you than for me. I breastfed Miss A every two hours for an hour straight when she was a newborn to establish my milk supply, and this is what she became used to…until she was ten months! Oy vey! I’ve now learned the balance with feeding on demand and scheduled feedings. At least I hope I did because I’m soon going to be taking care of another little bundle of joy! 😉

Crystal
Oh my, I have too many books going at once! I’m reading The Midwife and Ann Voskamp’s One Thousand Gifts, among others. So many books, so few hours in the day!
jolina
Hi, Crystal! No doubt, sister–you’ve got so many plates spinning, I’m not sure how you find time to read at all!
Audrey Kalman
I am so glad things are calmer for you this time around–especially being 30 weeks pregnant!
I have to say, however, that I spent 30 years focusing exclusively on writing, with the end result being that only my husband and a few close friends ever read my work. The sad truth is that in the crazy new world of publishing (and I know how different it has become, having worked in publishing in the 1980s and early ’90s), authors have to find a balance that includes both writing and promotion. But that doesn’t mean you have to do both all the time. I have periods where I am more focused on one, then on the other.
Good luck with the book and your next “launch.” I am excited to read “The Midwife” given my “day job” as a birth doula!
jolina
I agree wholeheartedly, Audrey: marketing is essential, and we must wear that hat, too, as authors, in order to promote our work. Last year at this time, however, I wasn’t writing at all. I was just focusing on marketing, and it zapped some of the creative life from me. This time around, I’m able to do both by using a few of my hours to create new content rather than promoting the old. It’s a nice balance. And wonderful that you’re a doula! My husband’s aunt has offered to be mine, and I’m so excited about it! 🙂
Lisa Cowell
I have just a few pages of Wanda Brunstetter’s “The Silence of Winter,” then it’s on to “The Outcast,” which is sitting on my bedside table.

Melissa Crytzer Fry
Although I am not yet published, I had to learn the hard way about prioritization. When I started my second novel, the industry preached “platform! platform! platform!” All along, I knew that I was taking precious time away from THE most important thing: the writing. Sadly, I whittled away probably an entire year-plus on building platform via blogging and social media, rather than focusing on the important part — the writing. and NOW? Now they say blogging isn’t so important for authors! Ugh. I’ve learned my lesson for sure. And I’m SO glad you’re enjoying this sense of calm with your newly-placed priorities. Yay! What I’m reading this summer: The Sleepwalker’s Guide to Dancing, The Museum of Extraordinary Things, The Son, A Fall of Marigolds. And of course your book is in the mix!
jolina
Shew! That’s a hard lesson to learn, isn’t it, Melissa? I was kind of in the same boat with blogging. I remember an agent telling me that it was pointless to blog if I couldn’t do it three times a week. Now that advice is completely obsolete. I’m sure, too, that social media will change very soon, and we will remember the hours we spent tweeting with woe. I guess we just have to work it while we can and always make sure that the writing comes first.
Cando
I am almost finished with ‘A Study in Scarlet’ by Arthur Conan Doyle. Loving me some Sherlock Holmes!
jolina
I need to read that, Cando; I haven’t read Sherlock Holmes stories in ages. Thanks for the recommendation. 🙂

I’m reading A Man Called Blessed by Ted Dekker, but I’ve been stuck for a week or so. I have 7 kids at home, so my time is a bit limited 🙂 But for non-fiction I am using “Jesus Calling” as my devotional and doing a Bible study with 2 friends using “What’s It Like to Be Married to Me?”
jolina
Wow! Those all sound like excellent, challenging reads. So nice to meet you here, Danielle!

Cindy
jolina
You’re most welcome, Cindy! Best wishes on the drawing!
Brittany
Right now, most of my reading is children’s books to my son. He is really starting to enjoy books. Only hard back books because he is a page ripper! I’m still figuring out the whole making time for yourself while being a stay at home mom thing. Seems like there is always something I should be doing besides reading for my enjoyment. Hopefully, my husband will be buying me a copy of The Midwife sooner than later. I know we’ll enjoy reading it together.
jolina
I know ALL about that mama guilt, Brittany! I read at night in bed when the rest of my family is asleep (I even have a tiny headlamp. 😉 Ha!) Audiobooks works great as well. Enjoy!
jolina
Congrats, Cindy! You won the audiobook drawing! 🙂
